New Nano Science Technology 2011 (The Future)

Welcome to the nano scale. Nanoscale is where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale. The strange world of nanoscience can take you into atoms and beyond the stars. A new horizon has begun for mankind in creating new technologies and one day eradicating diseases. That water bottle that turns urine into drink water could help drought stricken countries, instead of a little water bottle maybe a water tank version? Introduction to Nanoscience What is nanoscience? The word itself is a combination of nano, from the Greek “nanos” (or Latin “nanus”), meaning “Dwarf”, and the word “Science.” Nano refers to the 10-9 power, or one billionth. In these terms it refers to a meter, or a nanometer, which is on the scale of atomic diameters. For comparison, a human hair is about 100000 nanometers thick! Nanoscience is the study of atoms, molecules, and objects whose size is on the nanometer scale ( 1 – 100 nanometers ). Why is the study of nanoscience different than the same problems on a larger scale? Physics is different on the nanometer scale. Properties not seen on a macroscopic scale now become important- such as quantum mechanical and thermodynamic properties. Rather than working with bulk materials, one works with individual atoms and molecules. By learning about an individual molecule’s properties, we can put them together in very well-defined ways to produce new materials with new and amazing characteristics. Why is nanoscience suddenly becoming such a big

Nokia’s super hydrophobic nanotechnology at Nokia World 2011

Nokia’s latest “super” hydrophobic coating doesn’t take half-measures. This new technology binds a layer of nanotech magic to the surface of its devices that literally bounces liquids away. Although we’ve been told the nanotubes at work here are most effective with water, other liquids (and smudgy fingerprints) should also find the treated surface difficult to latch onto. Due to the thinness of this waterproofing solution, a spokesperson told us here at Nokia World that even the inner workings of a phone could be treated in the same way. No more incidents in the bathroom? Count us in. Check the video after the break for some slo-mo water slippage.

Thomas Abraham on Nanotechnology at 2011 AIChE Northeast Regional Conference at the Chem Show

Conference Organizer Lauren Deitch had a chance to sit down and chat with Dr. Abraham, producer of 2011 Nanotechnology Workshops at the AIChE Northeast Regional Conference at the Chem Show. Recorded on August 15, 2011 using a Flip Video camera. Visit us at chenected.aiche.org ChEnected—WhereChemical Engineers Mix it Up—is a unique online community created for and by young professional chemical engineers. Presented by AIChE, ChEnected is where chemical engineers can read, view, contribute, and engage with everything Chem-E. Learn new skills, solve challenges, find mentors, engage with other chemical engineers, and gain more exposure to hiring companies.
